Same mass objects on pulleys: Testing Experiment
Aim
To Test Newton's second law for the Atwood machine. Prior Knowledge
- How to draw force (free-body) diagram.
- Newton's second law.
- Newton's third law.
Description of the Experiment
The Atwood machine in this experiment has two objects of the same mass attached to the ends of the string going over a double puller system. The objects are positioned so that the object on the left is at higher elevation than the object on the right. Predict what will happen to the motion of the objects if Luis changes the relative positions of the objects, making the object on the right start at higher elevation than the object on the left.
Addtional Information
To make the prediction make sure you use free-body diagrams to analyze the motion of each object as a system using both Newton's second and third laws.

Questions
Did the outcome of the experiment match your prediction? If not, how do you need to modify the reasoning on which you based your prediction to fit the experimental evidence?
